October!? Really!

New Fall Board and MORE!

As a teacher there is nothing more beautiful than hearing a child read words you have taught them.   Although some of my children may be non verbal, they still learn and they still make progress as I will show you.  I did however have five verbal children who are using the PCI program read their first book this week and I was overwhelmed and thrilled.  It has taken this entire beginning of the school year to nail down our first site words enough to read their first book but they all did it.  We continue to work on fluency and rate of reading but STILL!  The words were, my, home, this, is, a.  The book of course, titled MY HOME.  I could not be prouder.  We will continue to work on that book for another week because it is so easy to lose those words when you start adding more.   I had fantastic progress with some of my students who are non verbal as well this week!  Check out the pics and I will explain further.

The efficiency of our grip is improving.....

This picture shows some of the kids painting in fall colors.  Once this dried and was completely coated, I cut it down into squares and ran it through the Edison cutting machine and made leaves for our fall board tree!

Pumpkin Patch math project..students add how many pumpkins they want to their page and write the number of pumpkins they have in their patch.

Following direction:  This is tough but can you see the white circle delineating where the kids were to glue the papers?  Normally I would have had orange and green paper everywhere but with NO hand over hand assistance and just verbal prompting David was able to glue with direction and put things where I asked him too....this is wonderful work!!

This is a ULS lesson, or Unique Learning System.  The little guy you see is called a symbolstix.  ULS is my FAVORITE way to teach....it works on several levels and you can teach to every level or one at a time with ease!
We have resources on Wednesday.  Here is our art teacher hard at work!

Squueeeeeze that glue Matthew!

Chase!!!!!  Great job holding that crayon and using it appropriately! I am so proud of you! Bet mom is too ;)  Chase was able to sit for an extended period of time and do this cat project for art class.

David loves to watch the glue drizzle....White glue can be hard for guys to see so the art teacher being so fabulous made BLACK glue!

What comes next...after reading the ULS stories we make sentence strips from the story!

Corey was able to glue his words down!

OK how proud am I.....David has nearly mastered matching shapes,  colors and images.  This lesson proved to me that shown a word he can match it and pick the right words out of a pile in front of him.  Not just errorless choice!  YAY David!

Corey finishing up his sentence strips....good work!

Happy boy!  David really did a great job this week.  He is coloring in the lines, matching words and using his PEC book appropriately.  Love his growth!

Great job Chase!!!!  Your mom is going to love your color pages when they go home!

Class Challenge Of the Week:
Leaving our decorations alone!
Class Goal Of the Week:
Picture Day Success!
Parent Question of the Week:

"Is he really learning something?"
AWW!  Well I sure hope so!  I hope that the testing I have done, the pictures I have taken and the work we send home are clear indicators of all that your kiddos are learning here in class.  I see remarkable growth in all the kids.  Some are reading, others are learning to effectively communicate, and each are learning on their own level and will continue to grow!

CSS is in charge of the Fall Carnival and we will be looking for ideas and thoughts on what we will do.  The theme thus far is Where Wild Things Are to go with the theme of the school year.  Looking forward to working with all of you and seeing you there!

You would have a bunch of people standing around in a cave, chatting and socializing and not getting anything done.”

  1. Mrs. Suratt, seeing the phenomenal progress that David has made since you became his teacher last year in Kindergarten is remarkable. The entire CSS program at Highlands has been wonderful for David. When David was enrolled in the program in March of 2009 at the age of 3 compared to his abilities now is unbelievable. Having Mr. Franken and you as his teachers been so pivotal in his growth and development. My husband and I see the daily progress at home as well. David is so much more independent than he was when this school year began in August. Is it possible for you to teach 2nd grade next school year?
